Chinese people used to celebrate the beginning of the year by eating lotus blossoms. This symbolized fertility and today, when you eat lotus flower petals, you can hope that you will become fertile this coming year. Others eat beans to represent the breaking of the cycle of life. These fiestas mark when people begin marrying and giving birth to children.
When people broke the cycle and got married, it marked the beginning of the planting seasons. Farmers would pluck the seeds from the trees and plant them in their gardens. This was to ensure the long-term growth of the crops. The festivities were then enhanced with the lighting of firecrackers and the ringing of the different chimes.
Because of the extravagant nature of Chinese New Year celebrations, many people from the cities stayed home. In fact, the large majority of people in the cities did not participate in the celebrations at all. The taboos and customs observed in these rural areas helped them cope with the festivities better. They were able to avoid the deprecation of their ancestors. This allowed them to celebrate with more liberty.
There are many more elaborate festivals that are celebrated in China every year. Some of them have been embellished to include human sacrifices. People who could afford it would offer their lives to see their loved ones properly buried. This is done as an offering to the gods for blessing the new year. Today, in China, people still pay tribute to their ancestors through these ceremonies.
Chinese New Year lasts for ten days. It starts with the closing of the Buddhist temples and the putting up of fireworks. Then, on the first day of the new year, celebrations would begin. Firecrackers are set off to scare away evil spirits. At midnight, all homes across the country would light candles in the front windows, wishing the new year's joy to the people.
When the ceremonies finish, meals are enjoyed and people sing songs in honor of Buddha. People wish each other good luck and happiness and say goodbye to their friends and relatives. Then, fireworks are set off to frighten away evil spirits and good fortune. People would also dance in the streets to enjoy the music and dance. Chinese people take part in firecracker games to show that firecrackers represent joy and happiness.
After the entertainment is done, celebrations would continue with dances, carols and other events that would mark the passing of the year. A banquet is then held and meals are served to the guests. This may also include traditional Chinese foods. Chinese people believe that food is a symbol of luck and longevity. They hope that by eating well, they will stay healthy and happy throughout the rest of their lives.
